Amber Marcum, RN, a Telemetry nurse at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Centralia, was recently honored with the DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing.
Marcum’s nomination exemplified her eagerness to go above and beyond for patients:
“I told this nurse my story about living in a house that is over 100 years old with no insulation or air conditioner, just fans that blow hot air throughout the house. She told me that she was going to get me an air conditioner. After her shift was over, she called me to say that she and her uncle went together and bought me a new air conditioner and delivered it to my house. She did this out of the kindness of her heart. She is a sweetheart, and I appreciate what she and her uncle did for me. I want to thank her with all my heart. God loves you.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33; the care Patrick received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. DAISY stands for diseases attacking the immune system.
