With the partnership of Central Illinois Area Food Bank and Feeding America, SSM Health’s Bread Basket Program provides a short-term supply of nutritionally dense shelf-stable food items to qualified patients, along with a list of community resources for long term food access. The Bread Basket Program is a collaboration between nursing, social work, and guest relations at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital.
According to SSM Health in Southern Illinois’ 2021 Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA), nutrition, weight, and exercise were identified by community members as the top three health concerns within Jefferson and Marion counties. The assessment revealed nearly 14% of the population experienced food insecurity of which, an unsettling 21% of the children in these communities have insufficient access to nutritious food. Studies conducted by The United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2030 show that food insecure adults are at an increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases. Furthermore, children who identify as food insecure additionally suffer from developmental problems and poor mental health.
Each year, SSM Health reinvests in our communities through charity care, medical education and research, and with contributions to community health improvement services. Based on findings from CHNAs conducted in each of our communities every three years, SSM Health together with government agencies, charitable foundations, and other local organizations to provide a safety net. With this, the health care ministry’s goal is to help people access preventative care, invest in critical services, and bring hope to individuals during difficult times.
